Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church has a very rich history; one of dedicated members and spirit-lead  inspired leadership.  This combination has resulted in dynamic growth.  Our modest beginning testifies to the power and grace of God in allowing His people to accomplish great things.In 1865, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Mr. Olympus Young gave a plot of land to freed slaves on which to erect a church.  Mr. Lawrence,  former slave holder, gave a bell from his plantation to be used as a call for members to come to worship.  This same bell sits at the front of the church today as a reminder of  of our rich history and of those who came before us.  Three years later, 1868, the church was formerly established and named Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church. 

The church housed the first kindergarten of Morgan City, it was the site for for the first four year high school graduation class of Morgan City Colored High School commencement exercise.  Our church also has a tremendous heritage of serving the local community.

Many Pastors have served over the past century beginning with Rev. Stepo and now our current Pastor Chrispin Finnegan Smith.  Pastor Smith earned his B. A. and M. A degrees from Virginia Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, Doctor of Divinity Degree from the United Theological Seminary in Monroe, LA and Doctor Letters Degree Baptist Theological Center in Houston, TX.  He has served as Dean of Extension School, United Theological Seminary, Union Sixth District Association in New Iberia, LA.  Pastor Smith has also served as First Vice Chairman on the Enrollment and Finance Committees of the National Baptist Convention, USA Inc.  He continues to be involved on various boards and organization in the community.

Many sons and daughters have come out of Mount Pilgrim, one of which currently serves as Associate Pastor, Edward E. Robinson.  We thank God!
